The effect of treatments regulating fruit removal force on short-term storage of sour cherry fruits.

ABSTRACT

Two sour cherry cultivars, Pandy and Erdi botermo [Abbondante di Erdi] were treated or not with 250 mg ethephon/litre when the fruits were at a ripeness stage suitable for freezing and preserving. The fruits were harvested manually or mechanically and held for 48 h at room temperature (20-25 deg C) or in cold storage (3-4 deg ) in 10-cm-deep boxes or in 60-cm-deep dry bins or bins filled with precooled water (10 deg ) or water which had not been precooled. At harvest, the level of uninjured fruits was lower with ethephon treatment than without, regardless of harvesting method. During the holding period of 48 h the rate of injury and decay [unspecified] in ethephon-treated fruits hardly changed but it increased in the untreated fruits. After 48 h there was no difference in the rate of decay between treated and untreated fruits. The results were similar for both cultivars. The effects of different holding conditions are also discussed.
