Asparagus: variation amongst plants in susceptibility to the postharvest disorder, tip breakdown.

ABSTRACT

Tip breakdown is a serious postharvest disorder of Asparagus officinalis which can result in severe wastage and quality loss. In this study, spears were harvested from 8-year-old cv. Mary Washington 500W plants twice weekly throughout the 1988 season, packed in unsealed plastic film bags and stored at 0 deg C for 4 weeks. Spears were removed to 20 deg for 5 days before testing for tip breakdown. From these results, 3 groups of 11 plants were chosen to represent high, medium and low levels of tip breakdown, and from these plants, spears were harvested again in 1989 and 1990 for storage and assessment as above. Significant variation occurred amongst plants in their susceptibility to the disorder. This variation may be genetic in origin, but the results were equivocal on this. Plants with low levels of tip breakdown had higher levels of soluble carbohydrates in spear tips than plants highly susceptible to the disorder. Protein levels and postharvest accumulation of ammonia were not significantly di

fferent in plants with low levels of tip breakdown compared with plants with high levels. The possibilities for selecting resistant plants are discussed.
