ABSTRACT
Fruits of 5 cultivars were picked 4 or 5 times at weekly intervals. Fruit firmness, starch content, % TSS and titratable acids were measured prior to storage under controlled atmosphere conditions for 6 months. The same quality parameters were measured and sensory tests were conducted at the end of the storage period. The data were analysed and the optimal picking date was determined using Streif's formula for estimating maturity index F/RS (where F = firmness in kp; R = starch index from 1 to 10; S = % TSS). The harvest indices at the optimum picking date were 0.27, 0.09, 0.08 0.17 and 0.16 for cultivars Elstar, Jonagold, Golden Delicious, Gloster and Idared, respectively.
