Main research results on fruit storage in Russia.

ABSTRACT

A complex approach to produce an integrated system which maintains fruit quality and reduces fruit losses to a minimum is presented. A number of factors were identified which could be used for assessing the suitability of fruits for controlled atmosphere storage, such as cultivar, growing conditions and orchard management, and physiological status of the fruit at harvest. Internal ethylene production was used to determine storage conditions. Membrane permeability was shown to be a good indicator of optimum picking date and for termination of storage, and a new maturity index based on the reflectance of intact fruits at 677 and 485 nm was considered promising. Regression equations were used to predict levels of breakdown, bitter pit and scald in apples.
