The effect of low oxygen storage on Jonagold and Golden Delicious apples.

ABSTRACT

Preclimacteric and climacteric fruits were stored for 215 days at 2 deg C in 1.3% O2 + 0% CO2, 1.5% O2 + 3.0% CO2 or 2.0% O2 + 2.0% CO2. In Jonagold, firmness retention was best in fruits harvested at the preclimacteric stage in all CA regimes, where up to 92% of initial firmness was retained. Climacteric fruits softened more rapidly. Results were similar for Golden Delicious where 84% of fruit firmness was retained by preclimacteric fruits in CA regimes of 1.5% O2 + 3.0% CO2 and 2.0% O2 + 2.0% CO2. Titratable acidity decreased in a similar way during storage in both preclimacteric and climacteric fruits.
