ABSTRACT
The storage behaviour of cv. McIntosh was studied between 1986 and 1992. Fruits were picked at intervals starting 5-6 weeks before the predicted optimum picking date (OPD) using the Smith method based on the mean night temperature in a 15-day post bloom period. Storage quality parameters (firmness, skin colour, TSS, acidity and ethylene production) were measured. The Smith method of predicting OPD had an accuracy of 2-3 days. The harvest index (HI) according to Streif was in line with the forecast OPD and was tentatively set at 0.16. Overall, fruits picked at optimum and late harvesting dates had the best quality after storage though physiological disorders were more prevalent with the late harvested fruits.
