The influence of different doses of fertilization on storage of apples, cv. Cortland.

ABSTRACT

Cortland apple trees were treated annually with combinations of N (60 or 120 kg/ha), P (80 kg P2O5/ha), K (160 kg K2O/ha) and Mg (120 kg/ha) from the third year after planting in 1979. None of the treatments had any effect on yield/tree during the trial (1982-92). However, firmness was influenced by fertilizer treatment, with the control trees (no fertilizer) and trees receiving P2O5 producing the firmest fruits after 5 months' storage in air at 2-3 deg C. The incidence of physiological disorders (mainly bitter pit) and fungal decay was higher in fruits from the fertilizer treatments compared with the controls, except for fruits from trees receiving Mg.
