Calcium-mediated postharvest changes in storageability and fruit quality of peaches.

ABSTRACT :

 

The shelflife and quality attributes of mature-green and mature-ripe fruits of cv. Surecrop were determined following pre- and postharvest applications 2000 p.p.m. CaCl2, 2000 p.p.m. Nutrical (8% soluble Ca) or 400 p.p.m. aminooxyacetate. Control fruits were untreated. Fruit samples were taken at intervals during storage at 3 deg C for 7 weeks. Calcium treatment, particularly CaCl2, increased fruit firmness and delayed ripening in fruits harvested at either stage of maturity. The effects of treatments on TSS content, acidity and pH varied between sampling dates. Calcium-treated fruits were more acidic than the controls, particularly where Nutrical was applied.
