Fruit controls in the CA technology.

ABSTRACT :

 

The components and processes used in the operation of controlled atmosphere (CA) stores in Italy are reviewed. Gas tightness is a prerequisite of CA storage. Free-flame, open-loop combustion is the most commonly used method in inert atmosphere generators, but oxygen reduction in the air was also achieved by closed- or open-loop catalytic equipment. Nitrogen generation apparatus is also discussed. CO2 and ethylene scrubbers reduce the concentrations of these gases within CA stores to optimize growth rate. Sensors and automation of atmospheric control are discussed. The advantages that CA stores offer and the expansion of their use in Italian agriculture, and over a wider range of crops, is discussed.
