ABSTRACT :
Cold treatment at 1 deg C for 16 days is necessary for disinfesting of oranges and lemons of fruit flies [Ceratitis capitata and Bactrocera tryoni]. In a study to investigate the effects of cold on fruit quality during storage, fruits were subjected to cycles of storage at 1 deg for 16 or 32 days followed by either 4 or 8 weeks at 10 deg and 1 week at 20 deg . Storing for 16 days at 1 deg had no effect on quality, but after 32 days rind blemish was increased and this was evident 4 weeks after completion of storage. Fruit rots and flavour were not affected. Storing for 16 days at 1 deg followed by transport at 10 deg and marketing within 6 weeks was recommended.
