The effect of irrigation on 'Tarocco' orange in cold storage: preliminary observations.

ABSTRACT :

 

The fruits were taken from trees that had been irrigated for 5 years, either with 2 semicircular under-tree sprayers on a weekly basis or with an overhead single full circle sprayer which was activated when a pre-determined temperature (35 deg C in May/Jun., 38 deg in Jul./Aug.) was reached. The volumes of water used annually were 7300 m3/ha and 4900 m3/ha, respectively. Fruits from both irrigation treatments retained good quality when cold-stored for 1 month. After 2 months' storage, the incidence of moulds on the fruits irrigated with the single sprayer was twice that on fruits in the other treatment. The maturity index was also higher for fruits from the single sprayer treatment at each recording.
