Preventing cold storage disorders in nectarines.

ABSTRACT :

 

Various storage treatments were evaluated for their effectiveness in preventing the physiological disorders of woolliness and internal browning of nectarines. Warming fruits at 20 deg C for 48 h prior to controlled atmosphere (CA) storage at 0 deg for 4 weeks prevented woolliness in the absence of high CO2 but did not affect browning. This treatment enhanced ripening, increased weight loss and caused softening. Exposure to high CO2 levels (25%) prior to CA-storage had little effect. Storage at high CO2 levels, especially in combination with low O2, significantly delayed ripening, retained fruit firmness and prevented both storage disorders. There was no deleterious effect on flavour with storage at high CO2 levels.
