Varietal responses of cut flowers to different antimicrobial agents of bacterial contamination and keeping quality.

ABSTRACT :

Cut flowers of Chrysanthemum morifolium [Dendranthema morifolium] (cv. Forester) and Calendula officinalis were pulsed with Septocid (1.5% cetrimide + 1.875% dichloroxylenol) for 2, 4 or 6 min. or held continuously in 100, 200 or 400 p.p.m. 8-hydroxyquinoline sulfate (8-HQS), 100, 150 or 200 p.p.m. of the antibiotic Ampicillin or 10, 20 or 30 p.p.m. silver nitrate. With Chrysanthemum flowers, holding in 100 p.p.m. 8-HQS resulted in the longest vase life (7.67 days) while holding in 200 p.p.m. 8-HQS or 150 p.p.m. Ampicillin resulted in better water balance. The highest water loss occurred with Septocid treatment (pulsed for 6 min). All treatments were effective in controlling bacterial growth. With C. officinalis, flowers in 400 p.p.m. 8-HQS had the longest vase life (6.5 days) while holding in 200 p.p.m. 8-HQS resulted in the greatest maximum FW, better water absorption and water balance, and the best control of bacterial growth.
