Environmental factors affecting the shelf life of Flame Seedless grapes.

ABSTRACT :

Bunches of grapes were harvested from vines grown either on newly reclaimed desert soil or on a clay soil. They were either wrapped in perforated or non-perforated polyethylene film or left unwrapped and packed in cardboard boxes, plastic baskets or date-palm ribbed boxes. The berries were transported 200 km from the desert site and 15 km from the clay soil site for storage. The shelf-life of the berries grown in the desert region was far superior to those grown on the clay soil, due to negligible losses in weight, juice or decay after one week at room temperature. Berries grown in the desert region had lower rates of berry shatter than berries grown on clay soil. The best packing treatment consisted of wrapping in perforated polyethylene and packing in plastic baskets; this produced a water loss of 0.3-0.5% and resulted in a juice volume of 70-80% after 10 days at room temperature. Fungal decay [unspecified] was greatest in berries from the clay soil and in berries wrapped in non-perforated fil

m and packed in cardboard boxes.
