ABSTRACT :
A study of black mould (A. niger) disease on onions was conducted in Australia between 1981 and 1991. Infection of leaf bases greatly increased in the month prior to harvest. This was influenced by the timing of irrigation, humidity and the prevailing temp. A range of effective control strategies included improvement in irrigation scheduling, crop density and harvest timing. Postharvest fungicide treatments and improved ventilation were also effective in reducing storage rot due to black mould.
