ABSTRACT :
Three sections are presented comprising a discussion of crop quality (definitions and strategies), the qualitative objectives of production and related specifications for crop management, and the principle themes underlying the scientific analysis of crop quality such as how a plant produces a given quality, how changes in environmental conditions and farming practices influence this and how quantity and quality interact. In addition, the problems of quality differences between farms, regions, countries and crop years and their analysis, codification and regulation are reviewed. It is concluded that a range of quality scales from the plot to the crop plan and the collecting zone are required in crop quality assessment, and that complementary simulation models are also required which can integrate the function of crop populations under farm conditions when modelling quality objectives.
