ABSTRACT :
Field-grown Rosa hybrida cv. Eiffel Tower flowers were cut in the morning at stem lengths of 15-85 cm, and stored at 20-22 deg C and 70% RH. Vase life averaged 4.5, 5.3, 5.9, 6.7, 7.1, 7.3, 8.5 and 9.1 days when the stem length was 15, 25, 35, 45, 55, 65, 75 and 85 cm, respectively. Total water uptake increased from 16.05 ml in the shortest stems to 42.29 ml in the longest stems. The flower diameter increased significantly with increasing stem length. In a separate experiment, roses were cut at hourly intervals between 07.00 and 18.00 h, at a stem length of 45 cm. The longest vase life and maximum flower expansion were recorded for roses cut at 17.00 h.
