Storage losses of onion bulbs.

ABSTRACT :

 

Onions growing in the field in 1980-81 and 1981-82 received N fertilizer at 50, 100 or 150 kg/ha and were sprayed with maleic hydrazide (MH) at 0, 2000, 2500, 3000 or 3500 p.p.m. at 7, 14 or 21 days before harvest. Onions were harvested and stored in ambient conditions in bamboo baskets for 5 months. As N application rate during production increased, postharvest storage losses due to sprouting, rotting, rooting, moisture loss and weight loss increased. As MH concentration increased, these losses decreased; spraying 21 days before harvest gave the best results.
