ABSTRACT :
Released in 1992, LN183 (PI574384) was developed via 3 cycles of recurrent mass selection for decreased seed dormancy in LN148, a line produced by intermating (LN61ND)S5/(LN68)S5 F1 plants. LN183 is characterized by the absence of postharvest seed coat or embryo dormancy, and the germination percentages of freshly harvested LN183 seed usually exceed 80%. Other C. lanceolata lines require a minimum of 4 weeks' storage before such germination percentages are achieved. LN183 can be distinguished from undomesticated C. lanceolata germplasm by the lack of postharvest seed dormancy; however, growth habit, seed shattering and other traits are typical of undomesticated germplasm. Seed oil, caprylic [octanoic], capric [decanoic], lauric [dodecanoic], myristic, palmitic, oleic and linoleic acid contents of LN183 harvested at Corvallis in 1991 were 285, 8, 836, 21, 21, 32, 29 and 46 g/kg, respectively, which are typical of wild germplasm. The 1000-seed weight of the 1991 harvest of LN183 was 2.9 g.
