Effects of ethephon on the respiration and ethylene evolution of sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.) fruit at different development stages.

ABSTRACT :

Straw-, pink- and mahogany-coloured sweet cherry (cv. Bing) fruits were sprayed to runoff or drenched with ethephon at 10 to 1000 p.p.m. Rates of ethylene evolution as high as 6 micro l kg fruit-1 h-1 were detected in ethephon-treated fruits. Ethylene evolution was undetectable in untreated, mature fruits. Fruit respiration rates declined with time at all ripening stages, regardless of the rate of ethylene evolved. Ethephon application did not affect the firmness of mature, mahogany-coloured fruits. These results confirm that sweet cherry fruits are non-climacteric because untreated fruits produced neither respiratory nor ethylene peaks near maturity. Respiration was not stimulated in the presence of exogenous ethylene during these later stages of fruit development, as it is in other non-climacteric fruits.
