ABSTRACT :
Onions, garlic, Welsh onions and Chinese chives are the main allium crops grown in China, with a combined planted area of 0.473 million ha and a combined total production of 11.16 t/year. Average yields are not high and improvements are required in cultivation, postharvest and processing techniques, in addition to the introduction of new cultivars and hybrids. The main cultivars and production districts for the 4 principal allium crops are listed and cultural methods are described. Research on breeding, cultivation, plant nutrition, anatomy and physiology, and in vitro production of virus-free garlic plantlets is described.
