ABSTRACT :
Bulbs of cv. Amarante were harvested when two-thirds of the aerial part was desiccated. In the pre-curing treatment, the roots and tops were trimmed (1) at harvest or (2) 3 days after harvest. In treatment (3), the roots and tops were trimmed after curing for 30 days after harvest. Controls (4) were intact bulbs. All cured bulbs (50-60 mm in diameter) were then held at room temperature (20-25 deg C) for 6 months. Bulbs in (1) showed the least weight loss after 6 months. The treatments generally did not affect clove dormancy, DW and water content during storage. Trimming the roots and tops at harvest is considered the best method for managing bulbs postharvest.
