Effects of different levels of preharvest shading on the storage quality of strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa Duchesne) cv. Ostara. I. Physical characteristics.

ABSTRACT :

 

Strawberry cv. Ostara plants were shaded during fruit development with netting of different levels of light penetration (74, 58, 48, 38 and 5%). After harvest, fruits were weighed, packed in plastic punnets and stored in ambient conditions (20 plus or minus 1 deg C and 70 plus or minus 5% RH). Weight, firmness, moisture loss and surface glossiness were assessed at 2-day intervals. Effects on quality were only detected at the lowest light intensity, where fruits were significantly smaller and suffered significantly greater postharvest moisture loss than those in other treatments. The location of fruits on the plant affected fruit FW, surface glossiness and firmness significantly; fruits shaded by leaves were heavier and retained surface glossiness longer than exposed fruits.
