ABSTRACT :
Strawberry fruits harvested 40 days after flowering (milky-white stage) were treated with 10, 50 or 100 micro l ethylene/litre. Ethylene treatment increased high MW RNA, poly(A)+RNA, poly(A)+RNA:RNA ratio, RNase activity and in vitro protein synthesis. It is suggested that ethylene may be a factor promoting the ripening of strawberry fruits rather than a byproduct of fruits during ripening, although it may not be the main ripening stimulator. The mechanism behind ethylene promotion of ripening in non-climacteric fruits is discussed.
