ABSTRACT :
Dates of cv. Deglet Nour were treated with methyl bromide at 40, 60, 80 or 100 mg/litre for 2 h under vacuum and then ventilated for 1 or 5 days at 25 deg C. Chemical analysis showed that there were no significant changes in the contents of protein or major sugars as a result of fumigation, or in the protein amino acid content. However, non-significant variations in the contents of lysine, proline, glutamic acid and methionine were found, possibly due to reactions with methyl bromide. It is suggested that treated dates should be analysed for residues of bromides before they are passed for human consumption.
