ABSTRACT :

A survey was undertaken of the vegetable-producing sector in Africa, with the aim of finding out how well urban needs are fulfilled, how to improve payment for producers, and how to limit imports. All parts of the sector were studied in Congo, Central Africa, Cameroon and Madagascar, including production, trade, transport, storage and processing. Vegetables form a basic part of the diet in these countries, and account for 15%-20% of the household food budget. Amounts available per head are lower than internationally recommended quantities in some countries such as Bissau, although they are above those levels in Senegal. Market gardening is an important and traditional form of income, requiring little capital but lots of labour. Vegetables are not traded internationally to any great extent as air freight is expensive, and only 10% of local consumption is imported. Access to land is the principal factor limiting income. Seeds and plants adapted to the conditions are needed, as well as access to wa

ter and in some cases, shelter. The trade is well adapted to uncertain supply and informal wholesaling. Any interventions will only be effective if they respect existing commerce, but improved transport, cold storage, packaging using local materials and aid to wholesale markets would all be beneficial.
