Innovations in agricultural engineering in the tropics: hulling cereals in sub-Saharan Africa.

ABSTRACT :

 

Postharvest processing operations for rice are briefly outlined, and an experimental rice processing facility in Madagascar is described. Current rice hulling technology in Senegal and its possible development are considered. Mechanization of hulling of millet and sorghum in the Sahel region of Africa is discussed, and the design and implementation of a huller designed by CIRAD-SAR (Centre de Cooperation Internationale en Recherche Agronomique pour le Developpement - Systemes Agroalimentaires et Ruraux), France, are described.
