ABSTRACT :
The effect of the pollen parent on fruit quality in 32 different combinations of apple trees were studied between 1988 and 1990 in Hungary. Cultivars Duncan Red Delicious, Golden Delicious and Idared produced firmer fruit with a greater acid content when pollinated by the cultivar Gloster. The ascorbic acid content of fruits of Duncan Red Delicious and Idared was increased, but in Golden Delicious it was reduced. When Gloster was pollinated by Golden Delicious and Duncan Red Delicious the quality of fruit decreased significantly compared to fruits obtained from open pollinated flowers. Pollinating autumn apple cultivars with early maturing ones decreased firmness (maturing time). When Idared was pollinated with Summerred the firmness of the fruit decreased significantly in comparison with fruit obtained from open pollinated flowers.
