ABSTRACT :
The paper considers the importance of agro-processing industries in the regional economy in India. Their role in regional surplus generated and value added is highlighted. Agricultural development and enhanced productivity levels are precursors to the successful development of processing activities. Agro-based industrialization in populated areas calls for massive investments in rural infrastructure, mainly in the areas of irrigation, research and extension, transport, and postharvest facilities. Policies relating to poultry, fisheries, dairying and horticulture are urgently required. Technology development for regional specialization needs to be fostered particularly for unirrigated crops and rainfed areas.
