ABSTRACT :
India produces nearly 100 Mt of fruit and vegetables, 18% of the gross value of agricultural output. However approximately 1% of this is exported. The paper notes the general importance of export to the Indian economy, and the development of schemes by the Indian government to increase the amount of fruit and vegetables exported. The paper presents information on the present export situation, before discussing the constraints to increasing exports. These include: poor postharvest management; inadequate cold storage facilities; inadequate processing facilities; underdeveloped market infrastructure; inadequate market information services; low levels of productivity; and fragmented holdings. Prospects for increasing exports include the comparative advantage that India has in the production of many fruits, and the increased importance that has been accorded to farm exports under the new agricultural policy.
