The Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata, a major pest of citrus in Israel, its regulation and control.

ABSTRACT :

In order to export citrus and subtropical fruits, Israel has to regulate and control Ceratitis capitata, to ensure that harvested fruits are free from the pest. Legislative provisions have allowed the establishment of a centralized Control Programme. Monitoring and control operations are conducted by a central unit, funded by growers and subsidized by the Ministry of Agriculture. Monitoring in orchards is performed with trimedlure traps. Control is by aerial spraying with malathion bait. The Inspection Service verifies the absence of C. capitata in fruits for export. When required, fruits may also be subject to a postharvest cold treatment, on shipboard (for export to the USA) or on shore (for export to Japan).
