ABSTRACT :
In a survey of 10 commercial cut rose flower growers in Escobar county, Buenos Aires, the concentrations of bacteria in cold-chamber water and flower stems of 6 of the most common rose cultivars in the area (Carinella, Pascali, Phytica, Red Success, Samanta [Samantha] and Sonia) were analysed. Positive correlations were found between the concentrations of bacteria in cold-chamber vase water and those of flower-stem xylem vessels. Although cocci, Bacillus and rod-type bacteria were found in the vase water, only cocci were found in xylem vessels. The possible mechanism of exclusion of certain types of bacteria from the stems and differences in this exclusion between cultivars are discussed.
