Economic and social structure aspects of the Argentinian cotton-textile chain. The current situation of cotton production.

ABSTRACT :

The article examines the development of the cotton sector in Argentina, the processing chain, and the effects of world market forces and regulations on the sector. The main producing region is in the north of the country. In the 1970s there were approximately 20 000 producers, 80% of which were small-scale farmers who were obliged to supplement cotton with other subsistence crops in order to achieve an acceptable standard of living. Since then, state intervention has ceased and insufficient profitability has resulted in a considerable decline in small farms, while larger enterprises are flourishing. This will continue to be the case unless government assistance to small producers is re-introduced. The article also examines marketing channels over the last 20 years.
