Some aspects of cane deterioration in Reunion Island.

ABSTRACT :

Following work on sugarcane deterioration in South Africa over the last few years, several trials were carried out at CERF to estimate the effects of cut-to-crush (or burn-to-crush) delays on important indices of sugarcane composition, notably juice % cane, pol % cane and purity. The validity of using ethanol % Brix in juice as an indicator of deterioration was examined. During the 1993 season, 3 tests were carried out in which different harvesting procedures (e.g. burning or trashing) were studied under different climatic conditions. Many results were found to agree well with those published in South Africa. Concurrently, primary juice was sampled regularly at the factories and was analysed for ethanol. Ethanol contents and the results from the research trials were used to monitor and compare cane qualities at several sugar factories. Generally significant correlations were found between ethanol in primary juice, other indicators of deterioration, and selected aspects of factory performance. Et

hanol is considered one of the most representative indicators of deterioration.
