ABSTRACT :
Injury to onions during harvesting and postharvest handling can be reduced by optimizing mechanization. It is possible to evaluate the extent of damage by measuring the CO2 respiration rate of onions. Higher damage causes an increase in the respiration rate. Using a conveyor belt as the collecting surface lowers the risk of damage as measured by respiration rate. Transferability between damage threshold measured by respiration rate and load values measured with artifical fruits seems possible.
