ABSTRACT :
The research topics for pear production in the 21st century should be: improved control of fireblight and pear psylla, better vigour control, breeding of scion and rootstock cultivars that propagate easily and produce high yields, highly focused training systems and optimal control of nutrition and water management. Also plant physiology research focused on inducing flower bud formation, preventing fruit abscission, enhancing annual flowering and fruiting, together with postharvest research aimed at controlling scald, decay, internal breakdown, surface scuffing and premature ripening will be needed. Induction of ripening after minimal cold storage and prevention of senescence in stored fruit are also identified as important.
