Evolution of agriculture policy in India.

ABSTRACT :

 

This paper traces the evolution of agricultural policy in India from pre-Independence to the present. At the beginning of the century agriculture had a colonial bias, but after Independence a series of policy initiatives were taken to promote the development of agriculture and achieve self sufficiency in food grains. Recently the agriculture sector has become very complex. Since 1990 the government has prepared a new agricultural policy in order to accelerate development and the viability of agriculture. The policy initiative includes a clear orientation to reduce current support measures, promotion of infrastructural development, promotion of people's institutions/cooperatives, development of postharvest technologies and value addition facilities, and creation of an economic environment for increasing farmers' own investments and efforts.
