ABSTRACT :
After harvesting, cut Eustoma grandiflorum flowers (cultivars Yodel Rose and Yodel Deep Blue) were pulsed with 2 mM silver thiosulphate (STS) for 30 min or 0.2% Chrysal AVB for 16 h and then held in various preservative solutions. Pretreatments did not prolong vase life but increased percentage flowering (from 24% in controls pretreated with H2O to 32 and 30.4% with Chrysal AVB and STS, respectively, when the holding solution was distilled water). A holding solution of 2% sucrose + 150 p.p.m. hydroxyquinoline sulphate + 50 p.p.m. AgNO3 significantly extended vase life (by 2.8 times compared with controls) and improved cut flower quality in terms of percentage flowering and FW. Another good preservative solution was 10-50% carbonated water. The optimum harvesting stage in terms of vase life and percentage flowering was when the first flower was open.
