ABSTRACT :
A review is presented of the distribution, propagation, management and postharvest handling of tamarillos [Cyphomandra betacea], with particular reference to experience in South America. Grown mainly in Andean highland valleys (altitude 1000-2500 m), where the temperature ranges from 16 to 22 deg C, tamarillos are generally pinched out when at a height of 50-80 cm to reduce wind damage. In the tropics, harvesting begins 5-7 months after cuttings are planted or after 8-12 months in the case of plants grown from seedlings. Harvesting continues throughout the year, yields of up to 20 t/ha being obtained annually for 3-4 years. Fruits can be stored at 3.5 deg and 85-90% RH.
