Enzymatic activity and mycotoxin-producing potential of fungi isolated from rotted lemons.

ABSTRACT :

Of 9 fungal species belonging to 7 genera recovered from rotting lemons, Alternaria alternata was the main rotting agent, followed by Aspergillus flavus and A. niger. Of the isolates, 37 were screened for their ability to produce enzymes on solid media. The majority of the isolates tested produced cellulase and many also produced pectin lyase (PL) and polygalacturonase (PG). Of 43 isolates tested, 17 were toxinogenic. A. alternata produced alternariol (AOH) and alternariol monomethyl ether (AME), and A. flavus produced aflatoxins B1 and B2. Alternaria toxins and aflatoxins B1 and B2 were also produced in healthy lemon fruits infected by toxinogenic isolates of A. alternata and A. flavus, respectively. It is concluded that the presence of these mycotoxins in infected lemons may constitute a potential hazard to human health.
