Eggplant storage at low temperature: the effect of the growing season and the method of packaging.

ABSTRACT :

The appearance of chilling injury (CI) on aubergine cv. Classic fruits stored at <10 deg C for prolonged periods was affected by the growing conditions and time of harvesting. Fruits harvested from southern Israel in Dec. and Jan. and from central Israel in July, exposed to high temperatures (30 deg ) during their growth and development, were very sensitive to CI, but those harvested from southern Israel in Mar. and Apr., exposed to low temperatures (15 deg ) during growth and development, were much less sensitive. Packing disinfected fruits inside unperforated polyethylene bags enabled then to be stored for 20 days at 8 deg and an additional 3 days at 17 deg while maintaining quality and preventing CI, whereas disinfected but unbagged control fruits showed severe CI. Polyethylene bags also slowed the appearance of external and internal CI symptoms in fruits harvested during the 3 seasons and stored at 6 deg , compared with unbagged control fruits.
