ABSTRACT :
The occurrence of the postharvest diseases anthracnose (Colletotrichum gloeosporioides [Glomerella cingulata]) and soft brown rot (Nattrassia mangiferae) is a major problem for the South African mango industry. A number of fruit treatment systems are in use at packhouses. Variation in the extent of their effect in controlling postharvest diseases is apparent from reports made in Europe. In the present study, fruit from 2 locations was used to assess 4 packhouses. Significant differences between the packlines examined were not found. Differences in disease control appeared to relate more to orchard management practices than to packhouse treatment.
