ABSTRACT :
Thermal fogging is a new technique perfected for the treatment of fruit and vegetables. It is based on the use of conc. formulations that are not diluted in water and used in a machine capable of producing an aerosol. The machine for this purpose, Electrofog Xeda, produces aerosol using a very fast warm air flow without any combustion residues and without adding any alien matter to the storage chamber, except air and the protective products. Advantages of the thermal fogging compared with the classical postharvest treatment are: (i) Treatment is carried out in cold storage; (ii) The treatment can be repeated without taking fruits out of the cold storage; (iii) Simplicity and economy of the method without practically any manual intervention and expensive investments involved; (iv) Very high capacity of the treatment (variable between 150 and 300 tons/h); (v) High homogeneity of coating, with possibility of residues reduction for the same level of protection; (vi) Elimination of the danger of inte
r contamination of fruit by spores through the treatment water; (vii) Elimination of the problem of exhausted water treatment containing pesticides; (viii) Elimination of the risk of incompatibility between two or more treatments; and (ix) Decrease of the phytotoxicity when using dangerous chemicals, since pure solutions are used instead of unstable emulsions. Moreover, no abnormal absorption of chemical may exist.
