ABSTRACT :
Orthophenylphenol (OPP) and sodium orthophenylphenate (SOPP) are, like all pesticides, undergoing re-registration with the USA Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Because of the extensive data requirements imposed by the EPA and the high costs associated with the requirements, the only postharvest uses for OPP and SOPP which will be maintained in the USA will be those for pears and citrus fruits. All other postharvest uses for these 2 chemicals will, under a timetable to be defined by the EPA, be phased out. As part of this phase-out, the EPA is also expected to revoke the tolerances for OPP and SOPP in all fruits and vegetables with the exception of pears and citrus fruits.
