ABSTRACT :
The results of a study are presented on the role of women in postharvest handling and marketing of banana and papaya conducted in Lampung, West Java and Jakarta provinces from August to September 1992. Fifty-two farmer families, 30 fruit traders and five processing companies were selected using purposive stratified random sampling. The contribution of women in decision making, farming and income generation was assessed. Women played no major role in postharvest handling and marketing but a significant role in processing companies, where 70% of the workers were women. Daily wages for women labourers were lower than those for men due to differences in jobs and productivity. There were no differences between male and female permanent staff monthly salaries. The main constraints women faced were lack of appropriate technology, knowledge and skills. It is concluded that women could gain more equity if the opportunity to develop skills in the use of new technologies was afforded them.
