ABSTRACT :
Advances are being made into ways of isolating and manipulating genes that confer desirable traits such as delayed ripening, improved, enhanced sensory attributes and protection against phytopathogenic spoilage. This overview focuses on the regulation of genes controlling ethylene production, cell-wall degrading enzymes, and resistance against viruses, bacteria and fungi. Tissue culture techniques in combination with gene transfer and gene integration technology are being used to genetically produce new horticultural crops with better keeping quality, organoleptic features, and resistance against microbes and pests.
