Quality control of citrus and stone fruits.

ABSTRACT :

In citrus (mandarins and satsumas), the application of 2,4-DP [dichlorprop], Fenotiol (thioethyl ester of 4-chloro-o-tolyloxyacetic acid) or 3,5,6-TPA (3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridyloxyacetic acid), at the appropriate date and concentration, improved fruit quality. Fruit size was increased and fruit colour enhanced when treatments were applied at the end of June drop. Moreover, treated fruits degreened faster, through a standard process, than nontreated fruits. However, a delay in treatment delayed colour-break and resulted in slower degreening. Peel firmness was also increased by treatment and postharvest fruit quality improved markedly. In stone fruits (peaches, nectarines, apricots and Prunus salicina), fruit size and colour were significantly improved by 2,4-DP applied at pit hardening. In selective harvesting, the percentage of fruits picked at the first harvest was increased. However, fruit firmness was reduced, resulting in lower postharvest fruit quality.
