ABSTRACT :
Hot water immersion of 26-h-old eggs of Bactrocera cucurbitae at 44, 45 and 46 deg C for 1, 3, 5, 7, 10 and 15 min was performed to generate thermal death time curves using 2 linear models. Linear regression gave a better fit (r2 > 0.946) than the Alderton and Snell method (r2 > 0.874). Regression analysis showed mortality highly correlated with immersion time and temperature. A heat penetration study using vapour heat treatment of squash up to 46 deg C core temperature showed probit 9 lethality was reached after 143 minutes; based on calculations, the additional 30 minutes of run-up and the 10 minute holding period was unnecessary.
