Transportation models: the treatment of losses in a tropical fruit and vegetable case study.

ABSTRACT :

 

A normative transport model that incorporates the possibility of assessing losses due to the specific characteristics of the transport system used is proposed. An application is developed for a cross-section of the trade of pineapples and tomatoes at a representative wholesale market from the Sao Paulo city in Brazil. The study revealed that searching for alternative transport technologies resulted in a benefit to the consumers through increased availability and a fall in price. However, the increase in demand did not compensate for the fall in price, so producers became worse off. Wholesalers were therefore not encouraged to invest in alternative transport technologies.
