ABSTRACT :
Cooperatives offer an opportunity for groups to jointly meet a need more efficiently than each individually. The concept of agricultural marketing cooperatives has worked well in the Tennessee Valley, USA. Many farmers in this area have small farms unsuitable for the highly mechanized production facilities that soyabeans and cotton require. Many of these farmers are growing labour intensive high value crops such as vegetables, and they have joined together in cooperatives to gain access to large regional wholesale buyers and thus improve their income. The paper addresses: how the cooperative markets were formed and alternative crops identified for production; the problems of dealing with wholesale buyers and how the markets overcame these challenges; how prices received by grower-members were determined by the cooperative; and the role of communication in achieving cooperative success.
